Volunteers´ opinions about the GES 2011

The success of The Global Economic Symposium 2011 would not have been possible without the highly motivated team of the volunteers! Everyone did a splendid job in ensuring the smooth operation of this internationally highly renowned summit of brilliant experts and Nobel Laureates from society, politics and economy. The following statements were made by Global Economic Volunteers.

“Ganz besonders hat mir der Teamgeist in der Helfercrew gefallen: Alle haben an einem Strang gezogen. Und man hat viele nette Leute kennen gelernt ;) .” (Dennis Steffens)

“Being guided by Viola and Tom, who did a tremendous job in organizing this crowd of 90 highly motivated volunteers and always answering all our questions, we as volunteers, were more than willing to put in great effort to make the GES a huge success. To my mind it was a privilege to be able to listen to global perspective solution proposals for some of the most urgent problems of today and the future. Working in this extraordinary team, the GES 2011 provided me with many unforgettable impressions and so I would like to thank Viola and Tom as well as the rest of the volunteers. You guys were great!” (Phillip Reichel)

“The GES delivered a vast of ideas – oftentimes worth to be discussed in a more intense way than it could be done in a few days. Besides these thought kick-offs I gained beneficial experiences and unique impressions as a volunteer.” (Malte Hoffmann)

At the end of the GES 2011 as result there were voted ten solutions-offer for the future. I like you to tell you my favorite three:

Popular Solutions of the Global Economic Symposium (GES) 2011The most popular solution-offer of the GES 2011 and one of my favorite solution as well is about the handeling of the waste of the world: It is abot the using waste and seawage as resources. In September this year the movie “Taste the Waste” of Valentin Thurn came into the German cinema and it shows dramatical facts: With all the food-waste people are dumping away in Europe, the whole world could be feeded twice. So at least we could use all the waste as resources for the future, that is an important point indeed. READ MORE »

“Insuring the Poor” by gaining trust

The last day of the GES started with some interesting sessions in the morning. One of the first was the session about: How to insure the Poor? A very young phenomenon is micro-insurance. It was coming up to insure even people living in poor households mostly in developing countries. Micro insurance shell  give the people the chance of getting insured, especially in the food and the health sector, even they don’t have a lot of money. They just have to pay a small amount of money to cover their insurance. Especially in the developing countries there is great food-insecurity. An example is the drought in Somalia this year. Millions and millions of people had to die from hunger, because not just the countrymen, but every people working in agriculture had catastrophic crop failures. In times of climate change insurance for the people, working in the agriculture sector could be vitally important and essential. But how should the people trust a company, which is coming to Africa promising they would insure the people for a small amount of money. How to explain the people that they get pay the money back elsewhere, when they come in trouble? That is one of the big challenges of micro insurance. READ MORE »

Finding solutions for global problems requires interdisciplinary thinking. In this tradition, the Global Economic Symposium (GES) provides the right platform for discussing the interrelations between psychology and sustainable finance. On the panel took place Sean Cleary, Chairman of Strategic Concepts, Robert A. Johnson, Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking, Tania Singer, Director of the Department of Social Neuroscience of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, David Tuckett, Professor of Psychoanalysis at the University College London and Director of the Emotional Finance Project, as well as Ibrahim M. Turhan, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey. Rodney Schwartz, CEO of ClearlySo guided as moderator through the discussion. READ MORE »

GES 2011 – On the brink is criticism

The GES, founded 2008 by Dennis J. Snower, is one of the big Think Thanks for economical and political issues. Over the years criticism came up as well.

Tuesday there were demonstrators against the GES in Kiel – against the GES in general. With slogans like: “The challenge: Global crisis. Proposed Solution: Abolish capitalism.” the demonstrators took position in front of the Atlantic Hotel on Tuesday afternoon. The Anti-GES-Coordination, the DKP (Deutsche Kommunistische Partei) and the Linke Jugend represent their concerns. Peter Peterson*, from the Anti-GES-Coordination, said: “Global Problems can not be solved from a few representatives of business. Only the entire society can accomplish changes.” READ MORE »

Problem-solving in or out of the existing frames – “Rules for Safer Seaways” and “State building in Pakistan”

There were a lot of interesting sessions and round tables on the second day of the GES 2011. While the sessions seem to come off well with a lot of participants, the round tables don’t have great audiences. That was sad, because especially at the round tables there was the possibility to interact with the panellists. 300 people came to see the opening plenary at 2.15 pm, where Nick Gowing from the BBC World talked with his guests about the Global Problem-Solving. At the end of the 75 minutes there were two more questions left: How to involve the modern art of communication in the global problem-solving and is it possible to reach changes with in the existing frames of our world and our world-society?! We should keep these questions in mind. Especially the question about the frames: Maybe problem-solving is not the hardest part of the whole idea, but the frames we try to solve problems in. Maybe we should overcome old frames of problem-solving between just states and NGOs. Maybe we should break open these frames and open our minds to new possibilities to more include the whole public to discussions – because the global problems are affecting every human being. For that the social media could be an opportunity. But that should be enough of this thinking-scenario of mine. READ MORE »

“Principle pragmatism” and the challenge of acting ethically

Acting morally under resource constraints:  the classical conflict in business making also enters the agenda of the Global Economic Symposium (GES). Hans-Paul Bürkner, president and CEO of the Boston Consulting Group, Bo Ekman, Founder and Chairman of Tällberg Foundation, Richard Evans, CEO (retd.) of Alcan Inc and Rio Tinto Alcan, and Arun  Maira, Member of the Planning Commission of the Government of India, analyzed the role of ethics  in contemporary entrepreneurship in the session slot “Ethics and Trust in Society and Business”.

Not surprisingly: All panelists acknowledged the important role ethical behavior would play for successful enterprises. Despite of the accusation that corporations were primarily interested in short-term profits, following some principal values in daily business were above all a competition advantages in the competition for customers. This were especially true because people were more concerned than ever about their rights and the behavior of suppliers, continued a panelist, which were also a consequence of the informational revolution caused by internet and social media. Welcome to „Kiel-Solution-City“ – Yesterday was the first day of the GES 2011. In front and behind the scenery

On Tuesday, the 4th of October 2011, the guests of the Global Economic Symposium 2011 had a windy welcome to Kiel. Typically for this region of north Germany the weather was chilly and the sky was grey, only sometimes the sun was looking out to say “Hello” as well.
Happily it wasn’t raining to date.

Behind the scenery

The volunteers of the GES 2011At 6.10 am the first volunteers started working on the first day of the GES. To welcome and pick up the first guests of the day at 6.40 a bus with the seven volunteers got off to the Hamburg airport. The volunteers are running the show behind the scenery of the GES. They welcomed the people at the Atlantic Hotel in Kiel, gave them their badges and helped them to register for the GES. The volunteers did their very best to give the GES-Members a good start in these two days of the Symposium. Gesche W. started the day at 7.30 am. She is a “Springer”. That means she is the “general dogsbody”, that is what we call in Germany: “Das Mädchen für alles”. “I do almost everything”, she said, “today it was not that busy. I think tomorrow will be more action, when the GES actually starts.” One of her tasks today was to notice the numbers of the parking places. So the volunteers, who were working on the parking deck, could instruct the guests arriving with the car correctly. Like all volunteers, Gesche studies at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. She is doing her master in economics and is looking forward for the sessions and the roundtables, which the volunteers can also join. “I have chosen sessions and roundtables with interesting topics in my point of view, it is nice that we can join them as well”, she said. Critical and inspiring discussions at the GES citizens´ forum

GES Bürgerforum

The Global Economic Symposium (GES) seeks the dialog with the public. For that reason, the initiator of this internationally renowned summit, Prof. Dennis Snower, PhD., president of the Institut für Weltwirtschaft (IfW) in Kiel, Prof. Dr. Rolf W. Langhammer, vice president of the IfW and Dr. Alessio J. G. Brown, executive director of the GES, took on critical questions of Kieler citizens concerning the current and future economic challenges. This dialogue between research and citizenship was moderated by the local newspaper, the Kieler Nachrichten, and took place on Thursday, 22nd September 2011 in the Kulturforum in Kiel.

Everyone who believed to hear the experts talking only in technical jargon and from theGlobal Economic Symposium (GES) Bürgerforum (7 von 18) academic ivory tower towards the audience was disabused. From the beginning, a very lively debate and a constructive exchange of arguments between the scientists and the citizens arose. Latter were not only concerned about the deep impact of globalization, which could also been seen on the increased number of cessations of businesses in the town area Wik, but also about the situation on the financial markets and the current debt crisis. It became clear: Both the experts as well as the audience share the viewpoint that fundamental changes are necessary to make globalization a success story for the whole mankind and future generations.
